Inspirations and Motivations
behind "Riding the Khamseen Wind"
For SALIM
The Power of Cultural Exchange
My journey from small-town America to the heart of the Middle East was fueled by an insatiable curiosity about the world beyond my horizons. The stark contrasts and rich tapestry of cultures I encountered became the backbone of my narrative.
"Every border crossed was a lesson learned, every stranger
met became a teacher."
The Tumult of War and Peace
My experiences in Vietnam during the war and later in Lebanon during its civil strife profoundly shaped my worldview. These periods of intense conflict and human struggle compelled me to share stories that often go untold.
"In the face of destruction, I found humanity's unbreakable spirit. It was this resilience I felt compelled to capture in my writing."
The Winds of Change
The title "Riding The Khamseen Wind" is inspired by the hot, dry windstorms that sweep across North Africa and the Middle East. Like these winds, my life has been a journey of constant change and adaptation.
“This metaphor encapsulates the unpredictable nature of life's journey and the resilience required to navigate through challenging times”.
Love Across Borders
My relationship with Salim and integration into his traditional Muslim family in Lebanon became a powerful metaphor for bridging cultural divides. It inspired me to explore themes of love, understanding, and the challenges of cross-cultural relations.
"In the space between two cultures, I found a new home one built on love, compromise, and mutual respect.”
